Undertone.

What it means in interior design.

An undertone is the underlying hue inside a colour, such as the green in a grey or the pink in a beige. It hides on its own and shows up next to other colours or as the light changes.

In practice

Hold samples against plain white paper to read their undertone. Most scheme clashes come from mixed undertones (a pink-beige sofa on a green-grey wall), not from the main colours.
