Shadow gap.

What it means in interior design.

A shadow gap is a small recessed reveal, often around 10 mm, left between two planes instead of a direct joint. It reads as a crisp dark line and hides small imperfections.

In practice

Shadow gaps replace skirtings and cornices in minimal interiors, but they need flat walls and careful trades. In an old building, a well-chosen skirting usually ages better.
