Sheen.

What it means in interior design.

Sheen is how much light a finish reflects, from flat matt through eggshell and satin to gloss. Higher sheen is tougher and easier to wipe, but shows every flaw in the surface.

In practice

Default: matt on walls and ceilings, eggshell or satin on woodwork and in wet rooms. Old, uneven walls want the flattest finish you can get; gloss on bad plaster shows every bump.
