Soil stack.

What it means in interior design.

The soil stack is the vertical pipe that carries waste from WCs and sinks down to the drain, and vents the system above the roof. Every WC needs a short, falling route to it.

In practice

Find the stack before drawing a bathroom: it decides where the WC can go. A WC far from the stack means boxed-in pipes, a raised floor or a macerator pump, which is noisier and needs servicing.
