Global illumination.

What it means in interior design.

Global illumination simulates light bouncing between surfaces, so a white wall lifts the shadows beside it and an oak floor warms the ceiling. Without it, renders look harsh and flat.

In practice

Most of a room’s light is bounced, so GI decides whether a render feels like a real space. Check the colour bleed: a strong rug or wall colour should tint its surroundings, as it will on site.
