Ambient occlusion.

What it means in interior design.

Ambient occlusion darkens the places ambient light struggles to reach: corners, the gap under a sofa, the line where furniture meets the floor. It is what makes objects look grounded rather than pasted on.

In practice

Keep it subtle; heavy AO reads as dirt in corners. If a render looks like a model, the missing ingredient is usually contact shadow where things touch the floor and walls.
