Grounding.

What it means in interior design.

Grounding is visually tying a group of furniture together so it reads as one zone. A rug is the usual tool, but light, a change of floor or a ceiling feature can do it too.

In practice

In a living room, the rug should take at least the front legs of every seat; a small rug floating in the middle splits the group. Leave roughly 30–45 cm of bare floor between rug and walls (rule of thumb).
