Anchor piece.

What it means in interior design.

The anchor piece is the largest or most important piece a layout is built around, usually the sofa, bed or dining table. Everything else is sized and placed relative to it.

In practice

Choose and place the anchor first, and spend most there; it sets the scale for every other piece. Buying accessories before the anchor is the classic way a scheme goes wrong.
