What it means in interior design.

A scribe is a strip of material left oversized and cut on site to follow an uneven wall, floor or ceiling. It is how fitted joinery meets an imperfect building without gaps.

In practice

Allow 20–50 mm of scribe wherever joinery meets a wall or ceiling, more in old buildings (rule of thumb). Joinery drawn tight to a measured dimension, with no scribe, is how wardrobes end up not fitting.
