From first principles to the finishing touches: shell, surfaces, space planning, furniture, electrics, plumbing and joinery, in the order a project runs.

The Lexicon.

Adjacency.

What it means in interior design.

Adjacency is which spaces need to sit next to each other, and which must be kept apart. Kitchen next to dining, bathroom near bedrooms, front door away from the sofa’s back.

In practice

List adjacencies before drawing walls or furniture: they decide the plan more than room sizes do. In a small flat, a bad adjacency (a WC opening onto the kitchen) costs more to fix than any finish.
